Text Box:

After a teaching career in suburbia, Roger developed a nostalgia for the rural Minnesota setting of his childhood and adolescent years.  Away to college, was his excuse to escape as a young man and back to his origins, is an effort to endear himself to the people who helped mold his personality.  The characters and their roles in his fictional Minnesota setting were created from the attitudes, values and foibles he has learned to cherish and respect.

Roger holds a Master of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin and did post graduate work at Pepperdine University in California, Nova University in Florida, Fordham University in New York, and the University of Texas, El Paso.  He taught high school English in Minnesota and Wisconsin and education courses at United States International University in San Diego.  He earned a Doctor of Arts degree from East Coast University in Florida.

He and his wife, Laurie, currently reside in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Just Thelma

Set in the 1930’s on a farm in Minnesota, a young boy and an old man find sanctuary on top of the windmill and inside the cupola on the barn.  A mother dies, leaving her teenaged daughter to keep house for a family of six adult men and one adopted infant. Three of her brothers marry, her uncle dies and the child is reclaimed by his natural father when he turns nineteen.  She fills the void in her home with another kind of orphan, a runaway teenage girl.  Shattered relationships, new social ties and normal events of farm life create constant challenges.  When all seems well, the catastrophe occurs.

Through the screen of humor and pathos, ordinary people struggle to find that balance between themselves and their environment.  Their actions are neither heroic nor tragic.  Through joys and sorrows they seek fulfillment and find a sustained optimism.

'Neath a Crescent Moon

At his family farm near Bovine, Minnesota, Matt Gerhard prepares for death. Mary, his wife of forty-five years and Dory, his sister who is a Catholic nun, attend at his bedside. His other sister, Sam, who died in the Hinckley, Minnesota, fire of 1894 and his daughter, Rose, who died of influenza following the pandemic of 1917, tweak his conscience. Torn between pride and remorse, he sets in motion a strategy to remove the stigma of a forty-year excommunication from the Catholic Church yet salvage his dignity. For his plan to work, he will need his estranged son, Earl, an emotionally damaged veteran of The Great War and Ear's army buddy, Marvin Getz, who collected bodies of fallen solders during that war.

Roger Storkamp created Bovine, Minnesota, out of nostalgia for the rural setting of his childhood and adolescent years. As in his first novel, Just Thelma, the characters in 'Neath a Crescent Moon reflect the attitudes, values and foibles of the people who helped mold his personality.
